BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has launched its compact electric vehicle (EV) Dolphin in Malaysia, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) giant's second model in the country after the Atto 3.

BYD and its Malaysian distributor, Sime Darby Motors, launched the Dolphin locally at an event on July 27, according to a press release from the NEV maker today.

The BYD Dolphin is offered in two versions in Malaysia, with starting prices of 99,900 ringgit ($22,138), and 124,900 ringgit, respectively.

For comparison, the BYD Dolphin is offered in three versions in China, with current starting prices of RMB 116,800 ($16,270), RMB 123,800, and RMB 136,800 respectively.

The BYD Dolphin went on sale in China on August 29, 2021, and measures 4,125 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

The launch of the Atto 3 in December last year marked BYD's official entry into the Malaysian passenger car market, where the company now has eight stores in operation, said Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific auto sales division.

"Together with our partners, BYD will focus on increasing our accessibility to our product and service across the country," Liu added.

Since its launch, the Atto 3 has become a new favorite in the Malaysian EV market, making BYD the number one selling brand of EVs in Malaysia, the company said.

BYD entered the Malaysian market in 2014, although it started its development in the local market by offering commercial vehicles and assembling its electric buses locally.

BYD struck a deal with Sime Darby Motors to import its passenger cars in October 2022, and the BYD Atto 3 was launched locally in December.
