Reports that Xpeng Motors consumers in Shanghai were unable to obtain license plates drew widespread attention today. The latest information shows that the issue has been resolved.

Earlier this month, some Shanghai consumers reported that the Xpeng vehicles they purchased were temporarily unable to apply for new energy vehicle (NEV) license plates in Shanghai. This was due to the recent relocation of Xpeng's Shanghai service center, local media Cailian reported today.

The relocation resulted in information not being uploaded to the system in time, causing some customers' license applications to fail, the report said, adding that the matter has now been resolved.

An earlier report by Yiche said that consumers who bought Xpeng vehicles are currently unable to obtain special license plates for NEVs in Shanghai because the electric vehicle company violated local NEV management policies.

As background, Shanghai currently offers free exclusive license plates to consumers who purchase NEVs, including pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

For consumers who purchase an internal combustion engine vehicle, they will need to spend about RMB 100,000 in advance to obtain a license plate in a bidding system.

That problem faced by Xpeng consumers in Shanghai emerged in July, and it's unclear when it will be resolved, Yiche's report said.

Ten days ago, some Shanghai residents said they were unable to get local NEV licenses for the Xpeng vehicles they had purchased.

Xpeng's customer service said at the time that the issue had been around for a while because the relevant documents had not been submitted yet, according to The Paper on August 12.

Xpeng currently sells the Xpeng P7 and Xpeng P5 sedans, as well as the Xpeng G3 series of SUVs, and Shanghai is one of the most important markets for these models.
