Tesla's focus on China comes as the world's largest auto market sees the company's rapid growth here.

Tesla's first-quarter revenue in China was $4.65 billion, or 24.8 percent of its total revenue of $18.76 billion, according to the company's 10-Q filing with the SEC in late April. That's up 52.8 percent from $3.04 billion a year ago.

The US remains Tesla's largest market, contributing $8.73 billion in revenue in the first quarter, or 46.6 percent of total revenue.

Regions other than China and the US contributed $5.37 billion in revenue, or 28.6 percent of total revenue.

Tesla sold 182,174 China-made vehicles in the first quarter, including 108,300 delivered in China and 73,874 exported from its Shanghai plant, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

Considering that the company delivered 310,048 vehicles worldwide in the first quarter, it sold 35 percent of its sales in China during the first period.
