Nio, Aulton and Botan are the leading battery swap station operators in China, with 1,452 battery swap stations as of March.

Nio (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) is the leading proponent of the battery swap model in China, with the largest number of battery swap stations.

As of the end of March, Nio had 915 battery swap stations and a 63 percent market share in the segment, according to data released earlier this week by the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance (EVCIPA).

Nio, Aulton New Energy and Hangzhou Botan Technology are the major battery swap station operators in China, with 1,452 battery swap stations, according to the data.

Nio's 915 stations are 70 percent more than Aulton's and Botan's combined total of 537. The former is the only company currently offering battery swap-enabled vehicles to the general consumer, while the latter two are mainly for the cab market.

It should be noted that as of March 31, Nio had 884 battery swap stations in operation in China, according to the company's published data monitored by CnEVPost.

The inconsistency in the data may be due to the fact that the EVCIPA's includes those that have been built but not yet put into operation.

In addition to the number of battery swap stations of major operators, the EVCIPA also published the number of such replenishment facilities in different regions.

Five provincial regions in China have more than 100 battery swap stations, with Beijing having the most at 269.

Guangdong has 199, Zhejiang has 136, Jiangsu has 112 and Shanghai has 103, according to the data.
