Nio entered into a partnership with Shell on charging infrastructure at the end of November last year. Now, its local counterpart BYD has also entered into a similar partnership with the oil giant.

BYD and Shell signed a global strategic cooperation agreement on March 23 to jointly enhance the charging experience for BYD's pure electric vehicle (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) customers, the largest Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker said today.

The two companies will start the partnership in China and Europe and plan to expand it globally, BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY, HKG: 1211) said.

Shell will provide BYD customers with membership services covering more than 275,000 charging terminals on its network, according to a statement from BYD.

BYD and Shell will also work together to develop fleet solutions and exclusive charging services for BYD's customers in Europe.

The two companies will seek opportunities to provide integrated home energy solutions such as dynamic tariff scheduling, solar integration, home batteries, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) charging for global customers.

The two companies intend to jointly establish BYD-Shell EV service centers in key European markets, and will jointly develop charging and digital services.

BYD and Shell intend to collaborate on global R&D in the areas of battery performance and industry-leading charging, according to the statement.

On a global scale, Shell will study how to apply its technologies and products such as E-Fluids and coolants to help BYD further save costs and improve hardware performance.

In addition to this, BYD and Shell plan to set up a joint venture to develop an electric vehicle (EV) charging network in China.

The joint venture is expected to operate more than 10,000 EV charging terminals in Shenzhen, with plans to expand to other cities in China in the future, according to a statement from BYD.

On November 25 last year, Nio announced it had signed a strategic partnership agreement with Shell to work together on charging and battery swap facilities in China and Europe.

Nio and Shell plan to jointly install 100 swap stations in China by 2025, and plan to operate pilot stations in Europe starting in 2022. Shell's charging network in Europe will also be available to Nio customers.
