Energy density of Dongfeng model's solid-state battery on par with regular one
The Dongfeng E70's solid-state battery pack has an energy density of just 157 Wh/kg, only slightly higher than the 150 Wh/kg of the BYD Han EV.
A catalog of new energy vehicle (NEV) models exempt from vehicle purchase tax released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) late last month shows the E70 with a battery pack with a capacity of 52.56 kWh and a weight of about 335 kg.
The catalog was released on January 29, but was not previously reported by the media. Recently some media mentioned the catalog, but did not mention the model's battery pack specifications.
This information implies that the Dongfeng E70's solid-state battery pack has an energy density of only 157 Wh/kg.
For comparison, the BYD Han EV in the catalog comes with a battery pack with a capacity of 85.44 kWh and a weight of 568 kg, implying an energy density of 150 Wh/kg.
Nio's 75-kWh hybrid pack released at the end of September last year has an energy density of 142 Wh/kg.
On January 23, Dongfeng announced that it completed delivery of the first 50 electric vehicles (EVs) with solid-state batteries, jointly developed with lithium producer Ganfeng Lithium, in Xinyu city, Jiangxi province.
The EVs are powered by solid-state batteries from Ganfeng Lithium, the world's largest lithium producer by market capitalization.
Dongfeng did not announce the range of the model or the energy density of the battery at the time, saying only that the battery uses solid-state flexible diaphragm technology.
The catalog published by the MIIT shows that the Dongfeng E70 has an overall mass of 1,515 kg and a CLTC range of 426 km.
