SAIC says its new zero thermal runaway battery system to go into production by year-end
Chinese automaker SAIC Group recently said its new generation of power battery system will go into production by the end of this year, achieving zero thermal runaway, and that the technology will be used in the latest high-end models of its R brand.
SAIC's next-generation power battery system is designed with the ONE PACK SIZE uniform size platform, with uniform dimensions in length and width and three series of thicknesses.
The company said it is compatible with lithium iron phosphate batteries, ternary batteries, high nickel batteries, silicon doped supplementary lithium batteries, and can also support solid-state battery technology.
The current market mainstream battery system products only focus on the cell or module level protection, while SAIC's new generation power battery system features comprehensive protection from the module to the system, the company said.
Its new generation power battery system energy density reaches 194Wh/kg, energy conversion efficiency reaches about 79 percent, and the cost per watt-hour is about 0.65 yuan.
Its next-generation power cell is capable of achieving a range of 135 kilometers in five minutes of charging time, the company said.
In 2025, SAIC will officially launch a high-safety, high-energy-density, and solid-state lithium battery for commercial applications, according to the report.
SAIC said it will also design a business model that separates the body from the battery and reduces the cost of ownership through a "battery bank" leasing method.
Its next-generation power battery system uses a "bolt-on" battery swap mechanism that can last more than 5,000 cycles, much higher than the 1,500 cycles of other manufacturers, the company said.
For electric taxis and other operating users who need to battery swap frequently, the ultra-long durability of the new generation of power battery system can greatly enhance the service life, SAIC said.
