Geely’s sales exceeded GWM may become “new normal”

Data shows that self-independent brands' market share increases from 41.2% in 2015 to 43.19% in 2016, reaching a historical high in the past six years. The newly released statistical report by CPCA shows that the domestic passenger vehicles’ sales volume reaches 2.08m units in January, 2017, decreasing 9.3% year-to-year and meeting a 23.5% month-to-month decline. It’s a remarkable fact that retail sales share of self-independent brands keep growing in January, a consecutive 25th month of growing share.

Geely still got an astonishing performance. On February 6th, Geely announced that its monthly sales reached 102,700 units in January, increasing 71% with the same period of last year. Emgrand, Boyue, Emgrand GL, Emgrand GS, Yuanjing and Yuanjing SUV all achieve monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units, in which Boyue sells more than 20,147 units and Emgrand GS sells 10,333 units. Yuanjing SUV also sells 10,226 units. The combined sales of the above three SUV models exceed 40,000 units, accounting for 40% of January sales volume. Geely also plans for selling 1m units in 2017, with a year-to-year growth of 31%.

Apart from Geely, Changan also performs well with a sales volume of 124,000 units in January, ranking 5th in passenger vehicle market. In contrast, GWM only sells 91,233 units in January with a huge month-to-month decline.

It is quite predictable that Geely’s sales volume would exceed GWM in 2017. Different from Geely’s balanced product layout, once the hotspot model H6 meets declining sales volume, GWM will lose a strong standing point. Besides, Geely’s high R&D ratio since 2012 also guarantees its products’ quality in the future. Last year, Geely released its future strategy, hoping to reach annual production and sales volume of 2m units in 2020 and becoming a most competitive and respectable Chinese auto brand.
