US electric carmaker Tesla announced on it official WeChat account Wednesday that the company will establish a research and design center in China, The Paper reported Thursday.

This comes nine days after Tesla formally delivered 10 China-made Model 3 sedans to customers at its Shanghai gigafactory.

In order to realize a transformation from "Made in China" to "Designed in China", CEO Elon Musk proposed to set up a design center in China.

The center began to recruit design personnel, with a slogan of "Building original 'Chinese style' Tesla to make the most beautiful Chinese art integrate into future-oriented Tesla".

Musk said at the delivery ceremony on Jan 7 that besides the Model 3 and the Model Y, in the future more models will be produced in China, even Tesla designed in China.

The Shanghai plant started trial production in late October and is now producing 3,000 vehicles a week, the carmaker said, adding it wants to completely localize its China supply chain by the end of this year.
