Shanghai December 28th, 2016 ZXZC - Limits and measurement methods for emissions from light-duty vehicles (China 6) was jointly issued by State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, and Ministry of Environmental Protection on December 23th. Two emission limit projects, National Sixth A and National Sixth B, are set in the standards, which will be implemented in the year 2020 and 2023 respectively.

Some Areas may Practice “National Sixth” Standards ahead of Time

“National Sixth” Standards, acting as upgraded standards for “National Fifth” Standards, are set based on global technical regulations and have a stricter testing procedure than European standards. The implementation of “National Sixth” Standards conforms to Chinese context and the environmental requirements, which is a leading Chinese auto emission system and shows positive significances to the Chinese auto industry’s developments and Chinese brands’ going global.

Liu Bingjiang, Director of Atmospheric Environmental Management Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said that l National Sixth A Standards are stricter than European standards but lower than American Tier 3 emission limit level. National Sixth B standards have almost the same level with average limits from American Tier 3 standards. Considering the different testing procedure and the introduction of RDE regulation and PN limits, National Sixth Standards are one of the strictest emission standards across the world.

Only less than four years are left for the implementation of “National Sixth” standards, which displays a great challenge. Besides, the tight schedule and long system development cycle accumulates more risks. It’s known that most auto companies are actively addressing with such problems by investing funds and human resources to develop new products. Besides, some cities or areas may implement the National Sixth standards ahead of time.
